How to add a primary key to a table with existing data

The columns in the PK must be unique and NOT NULL. You may need to ensure these columns have unique data in them prior to setting the primary key. If the data is unique, the following statement (example) will work:

ALTER TABLE [dbo].[FactLocateOrdersSKUAggYear]
add primary key clustered (
[dw_order_year_key] ASC,
[dw_brand_id] ASC,
[dw_product_id] ASC
)

Cannot define PRIMARY KEY constraint on nullable column in table

This error occurs if you attempt to create a Primary Key with a column that is defined as accepting NULL values.

For Example:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[FactLocateOrdersSKUAggYear](
[dw_order_year_key] [int] NOT NULL,
[dw_brand_id] [smallint] NULL
)

This error will occur if a PK is created that includes dw_brand_id. To resolve, drop any indexes that reference this column and then execute:

ALTER TABLE [dbo].[FactLocateOrdersSKUAggYear] ALTER COLUMN dw_brand_id smallint NOT NULL

How to Add a Foriegn Key Relationship to a table

ALTER TABLE [dbo].[FactLocateOrdersSKUAggYear] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_FactLocateOrdersSKUAggYear_DimBrand] FOREIGN KEY([dw_brand_id])
REFERENCES [dbo].[DimBrand] ([brand_id])
GO

ALTER TABLE [dbo].[FactLocateOrdersSKUAggYear] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_FactLocateOrdersSKUAggYear_DimBrand]
GO

Note: Datatypes must be the same for columns in the relationship or a data type error will occur.

How to change the datatype of a column on a table already populated with data

ALTER TABLE [dbo].[tablename] ALTER COLUMN column_name smallint

SQL Server Best Practices

I believe that patterns and best practices are an essential knowledge base that every computer professional should always focus on keeping fresh.  As a process-oriented professional focusing on efficiency and reducing variation and re-work, I strive to find a toolkit of best practices that can be published to our DBA or BI Team's corporate portal.  This particular link is a great start for building a solid foundation of SQL Server best practices.

Welcome!

Greetings! My name is Richard Button and this is a new blog feeding on almost 20 years of database experience and focusing primarily on database technology, best practices, products, applied techniques, challenges, problems, and training.  Basically...Everything SQL.

Products include, but are not limited to SQL Server (MSSQL), MS Access, T-SQL Querying, SQL Integration Services (SSIS), DTS (Data Transformation Services), and SQL Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Analysis Services (SSAS/OLAP).

Topics are intended to range from simple database topics to advanced techniques and best practices.  Topics are meant to be "real world' applications of database administration, database development, business intelligence development, enterprise architecture, data warehouse design and implementation, support, break-fix, and so on.

My background covers all these areas from large companies like Sony, Honeywell Bull, Chicos to small companies like Miva, Findwhat.com, small real estate offices and medical offices, and individuals just wanting to learn a little database speak or building web or client based applications that are wired to an information store (database, spreadsheet, xml, file, or other repository).  I also have experience writing over 5000 technical articles, leading enterprise technical writing teams, architecting, developing, and deploying enterprise web applications, designing and integrating disparate information systems, building search and chat applications, and leading Six Sigma business process improvement projects.  All of these area's are fair game as one way or another, they can be tied to an information store - like a database.

Please provide as much feedback as you'd like.  My goal is to help people through me experience and conversations with colleagues and fellow bloggers!  This is my motivation and I hope you enjoy your visit.  Thank you!

Rich
